VINCENT VAN GOGH/CROSS SECTION

The Peruvian dance company - Yvonne von Möllendorff-Danza Contemporanea - has recently staged a choreography on the life and work of Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. Created as a full-length program this work is divided into 14 scenes. Music, dance, theatre and visual arts are linked tightly together under the title Cross Section/Vincent van Gogh, that has been elaborated after meticulous investigation of this outstanding artist, involving a team of collaborators, specialists in this field: painters, psychiatrists, art historians ... The work is based entirely on the life and work of the tortured nineteenth-century Dutch painter, whose personality and emotions are represented by the actors in a complex double role (Vincent/Theo and Theo/Vincent) in order to underline the strong bond between the two brothers. Set to a variety of music (Satie, Stravinsky, Ravel, traditional Japanese, Peruvian composer Manongo Mujica among others) the work dwells on the passionate inner dialogue, the extreme situations and the extraordinary energy that reach down to us through the colors, forms and 'sound' in the paintings of van Gogh. A careful lighting-design stresses on the choreography's dreamlike atmosphere that is meant to recreate the labyrinth of his mind and the hidden mysteries of the soul that anguished this artist, whose mood may swing from wild euphoria to deep despair.

OPEN ARMS

Dedicated to CHANCAY, Randomness and Time, this work assumes that the pre Columbian past is still very much present in modern Peru (Chancay is one of the desert cultures that bloomed before the arrival of the spaniards). The ceramics and fabrics left in the desert are enough material to stir the imagination of dancers and Peruvian composer Manongo Mujica. Wind, water, rituals, colors and quietness are the traces around which the metaphors have been structured and create a most “transparent” choreographic design.

MAGIA

“This production is an homage to 16th century poet don Luis de Gongora and fusions masterly the ancient art of stage magic, dance, classic poetry, flamenco and theatre …” As a critic has pointed out, this work is “ … a most complex creation, featuring a stunning cast that transmits beauty and celebrates imagination …”

FIVE CARDINAL POINTS and TIME, WITHOUT DOUBT, HAS EARS

double program

The title of the first choreography relates to an exciting topic: Five Cardinal Points which  are, finally, “that what moves me....” Far from the geographical context the fifth point is in this case the Self, the observer. The other four suggest attitudes and directions that certainly neither are realistic nor objective.  The work is performed by 3 dancers, 2 actors and a magnificent hawk.

The second half of the program is made up of playful sketches that refer to a different way of listening to music and stretching  stage space. It  features live music (piano) played by Daniel Janke a Canadian composer who is also the author of Five Cardinal Points.

THE MAGICIANS OF SILENCE

This work is specially designed for children, as an introduction to symphony music and performing arts. Based on a tale by Hernan Garrido-Lecca and composed by Jimmy Lopez it is performed by a cast of 24 on stage - among dancers, very young ballet students, a magician, a juggler …) and a full symphony orchestra in the theatre pit.

The story tells how a fearful monster devours the instruments that the inhabitants of a happy village use to play and how they got rid of the danger inspired by, again, the power and beauty of  music. This huge production was highly successful and had been see during the first 3 weeks by 11.000 people.
